FSC®
Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) certification is an internationally recognised and accepted standard in sustainable forest management. The FSC promotes the use of forests and forest products in such a way that is socially, environmentally and financially sustainable. This is accomplished through assessment against a set of performance standards that are based on FSC's ten Principles and Criteria of responsible forest management.
FSC certification covers all wood related industry from the growth of raw material in the forest (forest management certification), through the processing sectors (chain of custody (COC) certification), to the marketing and labelling of consumer products (also covered by COC certification). Consumers can be assured that by purchasing a wood or wood based product bearing the FSC name or trademark, that they are purchasing an item that has been produced in a responsible, sustainable manner.
In July 2004, SWEL attained FSC Chain of Custody certification for its mill and port operations for both certified wood and uncertified controlled material.
SWEL adheres to the FSC Core Labour requirements and its policy may be found here: Core Labour Requirements Compliance Policy.
SPFL has also attained FSC Chain of Custody certification in association with its forest certification. FSC certification was achieved in February following a detailed audit of their operations. This achievement cemented SPFL's commitment to uphold the guiding principles and criteria of the FSC. As a dynamic forestry company, SPFL's approach to exploring better alternatives has integrated well with the FSC's philosophy of continual improvement. This improvement is measured by means of annual audits.
For further information on monitoring results including production rates, growth rates, observed changes to flora and fauna, environmental & social impact assessment results of forest operations including health & safety statistics, visitor numbers and the number of permits issued and a brief overview of cost, productivity and efficiencies of forest management, please contact the Southwood office at 45 Kekeno Place, Awarua, Invercargill.
